Slaves

All Slaves

  • Slaves may be punished or slain for any given reason, or none at all. Their lives are in the hands of the free and the decision of punishment is up to the free. These are the most common reasons for Slaves to be beaten or killed. No other free needs to give approval for such matters:

    • Wielding any weapon. This does not apply to common household items such as shaving razors and kitchen knives unless those items are used to attack a free person.

    • Striking a free person, the penalty is commonly death by impalement; preceded by lengthy torture should said free person decide to take action.

    • Claiming a caste. This includes stating such positions such as 'scribe slave', 'physician slave', etc.

    • Wearing the garment of a free woman.

    • Wearing opaque veils, unless it is during a slave dance, or in a performance of the caste of entertainers

    • Building structures.

    • Touching or handling legal documents, unless it is under the explicit order of a free and the documents secured within a confined satchel or container.

    • Teaching free people.

    • Playing Kaissa

    • False yielding

  • In any legal proceedings, the testimony of slaves may be taken by torture. This is solely in the discretion of the courts.

  • Female slaves must wear a visible token of their slavery within the city limits. Male slaves are exempt from this law. It is not good for male slaves to understand their true numbers.

  • A kajirus may be slain for touching either a free woman or a kajira without permission.

  • Freed slaves require explicit papers of manumission or they may be enslaved again without repercussion. Freed kajirae with pierced ears should be especially careful to hold onto their papers.

  • Recently freed slaves will be allowed a short grace period in which they might take time to appropriately dress. They also should make arrangements to join a Caste and swear to the Home Stone. As long as the arrangements are made, they will not be reduced to the status of outlaw.
