Entering Minus

There is no special entry requirement for Minus. All visitors are welcome. Minus is a village with extensive commerce and trade. There will be those staying in the village who do not apply for citizenship for Treve but are approved legal residents. They still require permission to enter the hidden city.  Any unescorted female is subjected to capture and enslavement in Minus. Any slave wandering in Minus without an owner present is subject to capture rights and may be taken to Treve bound and nude via tarn back.

About Minus

Despite past renditions of the village, Minus is not a haven or den for thieves, outlaws, assassins, etc. It's a village that happens to be under the control of Treve. It is not a land without laws and consequence. It is a village centrally located between Ar and the Vosk River Region. Due to location, it depends on trade and merchants. Of course, like other cities, you may run into those thieves, outlaws, assassins, etc., but that doesn't mean they're not subjected to consequences for being within the village.

The only reference pertaining to Minus in the books can be found in this one quote:

"Those men," said Ena, "are Raf and Pron, huntsmen of Treve, though they range widely in their huntings, even to the northern forests. By order of Rask of Treve they, by their skill in weapons and their mastery of the techniques and lore of the hunt, and pretending to be of Minus, a village under the hegemony of Ar, made petition and successfully so, to participate in the retinue of the great Ubar." She smiled at me. "Treve, she said, has spies in many places."  ~"Captive of Gor" page 298

The Caste of Merchants

This is the caste commonly associated with selling/buying/trading of goods, but also the inn keepers/tavern owners.

"I am a merchant," said Mintar, "and it is in my code to see that I am paid."

.....

Mintar relaxed on the cushions and seemed pleased. I realized, to my amusement, that he had been afraid that some particle of his investment might have been sacrificed. He would have had a man killed rather than risk the loss of a tenth of a tarn disk, so well he knew the codes of his caste.

"I am a free woman of Vonda!" the woman at the counter had been crying out last night. "You cannot put me out!"

"You will pay or be ejected," Strobius had told her.

"You cannot put me out into the street!" she said.

.....

"You cannot put me out into the street!" had cried the free woman.

"I can," he informed her soberly.

"I am a free woman of Vonda," she said, "a member of the Confederation."

"I am an innkeeper," said he. "My politics are those of the ledger and silver."

The Caste of Metal Workers

This is the caste commonly associated with branding slaves, making weapons, collars and iron belts, and even locksmiths. In Witness of Gor, a member of this caste came to pierce the ears of Dorna (the Proud) and Janice, the slave purchased to see to the care of Prisoner 41 - Marlenus. Some are also known to work with precious metals to create jewelry.

Lastly it might be mentioned that it is a capital offense for a locksmith, normally a member of the Metal Workers, to make an unauthorized copy of a key, either to keep for himself or for another.

I heard the ringing of a metal worker's hammer on metal, where simple straps of iron were being curved about the necks of beauties, their heads and hair over the anvil, these serving as temporary collars.

The Caste of Carriers of Wood

This is the caste commonly associated with supplying wood for fuel in Gorean cities. They also supply other castes with this invaluable material.  Coopers use wood to make barrels. Wood Workers and Carvers make a variety of things, including furniture and dishes. Wainwrights to build wagons. Coopers to make barrels.

I had scarcely stepped from the stones of the road when, coming down the road, each step carefully measured and solid, I saw a wide, hunched figure, bending under a gigantic bundle of sticks, strapped to his back by two cords which he held twisted in his fists in front of his body. His stature and burden proclaimed him a member of the Caste of Carriers of Wood, or Woodsmen, that Gorean caste which, with the Caste of Charcoal Makers, provides most of the common fuel for the Gorean cities.

Further, if foresters, or independent huntsmen, were in the vicinity, my shelter would be as invisible to them as it had been at first to me.

The Gorean woodsman, it might be mentioned, before he will strike a tree with his ax, speaks to the tree, begs its forgiveness and explains the use to which the wood will be put.
